- Dr Francis trained in Ophthalmology at Concord, Sydney Eye Hospital and in England
- Was the editor of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Ophthalmology between 1987-91 and headed the Ocular Plastics Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital between 1996-2001
- Dr Francis continues to be a consultant Ophthalmologist Surgeon at Prince of Wales Hospital and Ophthalmic Surgery Centre
- Dr Francis is a doctor of Science Candidate at the University of New South Wales and will reach 200 publications in the peer reviewed literature by the end of 2009
